Professor Corso. “Smart working lets to work more and better: his value is near 14 billion of euro”

In a recent interview Mariano Corso, professor at the “Politecnico di Milano” and responsible of the Observatory Smart Working, declared:

“Forget old models of flexible jobs of the last years, from the telework to part-time.

Smart working is another thing, in Italy, is about 305.000 workers but could be estimate in 13,7 billion of euro of value added. It is a managerial model that manage the interaction from company and worker over work modality to achieve the results.

Smart working doesn’t mean only “work from home”, not only. Even it is true the smart workers pass 67% of their time inside the company, against the 86% of the other, it is true too that they are so joined to a single location inside the company.
Smart working exceeds the concept of space and working hours, let the workers to manage in a flexible way his job, organized based on the results. This means work more and not less as usual people think and because the worker is more responsive and motivated.

Based on our research only 1% of smart workers feels not satisfied, against the 17% of other workers; the 50% is completely satisfied of the way to organize his job, against the 22% of other workers. Less constrains contribute to create a better climate inside the office and increase the productivity.
More productivity estimated in 13,7 billion of euro: in Italy there are about 22,55 million of workers of wich 5 million compatible with smart working. If you consider that in average 70% of the workers accept this project, the workers involved could be about 3 million: the productivity in average could increase about 15% for every smart worker, so the potential is about 14 billion.

The other benefits are, for the company, cost reduction, because of the reduction of the space, near 30% but in other cases, like the “Zurich Company” in Milan, about 50%. After this the company become more attractive, especially for young workers.
The worker improve is work-life balance and this means less absences, more motivations, less illnesses and better personal satisfaction.
Adding to this the time and money saved to move to the office, hours to dedicate to the private life.

In general smart working is applicable to all the jobs, plant included, but not all the modality.
For example the Tetrapak company in Modena: the autonomy is applied to all the team who is able to self-manage even without be phisically and completely in the plant. The plant is opened from 6 to 23 and the workers sign their presence and the extraordinary hours. With apposite kits workers could work from home in some cases.

The risk of the smart working is to become the fashion of these years, because is identified with the comfort to work from home. Instead smart working is results orientation, personal satisfaction, digital competence and economic benefits for all. We have to work much on manager training, because by the awareness of the top management that all depends.
Another risk is the over-work: the danger is that if you could work in every moment and every site, you could work always. This could cause more problems unless solve them.

Real cases in Italy are “Generali Italia”, “Costa Crociere” o “CNH Industrial” interesting the last, because is a manufacturing case. Benetton just started the path but the more interesting is “AXA Italia” that eliminated permissions, allowing workers to work two days at week from home and by organizing working hours in a flexible way, based on the objective to achieve.

Based on a recent interview on the linkedibmi team, most part the colleagues declared it is a Good/Excellent idea to introduce experience in Remote Working in IBM i platform.

The reasons could be different: try to add an extra income to the existing jobs, be sure to have a valid alternative in case of dismissal… or maybe as main job.

Remote Working: the example of Accenture

One example of Remote Working is the Accenture case, described in the following article.

Accenture was one of the first companies to introduce remote work since 2009 as a kind of “agile” job. Remote work born by the evolution of consulting work, let the employee to became more responsible and manage better their time and let the company to better use spaces and buildings. Applied until two days at week It involves about 83 per cent of the workers with a fixed site to work. Managers and consultants escluded because their job is siteless. The remote working must’nt be realized necessarly from home.

The project activated in the offices of Milano, Torino, Roma e Napoli became realty thanks to the last utilities (data card, instant messaging) and the wishness to try alternative models of flexible jobs.

The remote working is settled by an agreement from the company and the worker and both have common interest to respect the terms: numbers of days, job hours and environment. The working time out of the office is defined with the help of a supervisor. The working hours corresponds to the same in the office with the requirement to respect weekend and night rest. About work environment it isn’t necessary to work necessarly from home: the company let to have equipments to work out of the office (laptop, cell phone, internet key,ergonomic kit and free ADSL).

The project has given advantages to employee, company and natural environment.


– improve the balance from private life and professional life, giving benefits to the workers who need more flexibility: parents with little children, families that must take care to their relatives

– let to work with more attention

– reduce time and costs of moving to the office


– space reduction and space optimization (near 25/30 % of reduction)

– start a path of cultural evolution

The path to realize the project followed a specific iter. First thing a task force has been created to evaluate all the aspects with the use of legal resources, human resources, technologic resources. After an experimental group of 130 workers with different functions has been used to try and test this new way to work.

To verify the results and the improving areas two different survey has been realized, one for workers and one for supervisor. The results confirmed the project validity:

– transport time reduction from and to the office (77% of the workers)

– improuvement of the life balancing from private life and work life

– possibility to work in a more quite enviroment

From the supervisor point the success has been achieved thanks to improvement of the people’s motivation and increasing productivity.

With the massive internet development, there are a lot of possibilities to sell your knowledge. The main advantage is the possibility to achieve every world’s corner and each one, without problem of time and travel.
Most high schools too, are structured to use e-learning lessons.

It’s fundamental too, gather feedback from student asking what works and what doesn’t works and share with them all the ideas to improve your online course.
